Not-for-profit & registered organisation accounting in Sydney

Reporting your board and your auditor can rely on.

Charities, not-for-profits and registered organisations answer to more people than a company does — a board or committee, a regulator, funders and members. We keep the books, prepare financial reports that satisfy all of them, and prepare the file your auditor asks for so the audit runs short. The audit itself must be done by an independent auditor, and we work alongside them.

Call 02 9267 6533

What this covers

Bookkeeping and payroll, monthly or quarterly
ACNC-compliant annual financial reports and the Annual Information Statement
Registered organisation reporting to the Fair Work Commission — the general purpose financial report, operating report and committee of management statement
Special purpose and general purpose financial statements, as required by your size and constitution
Grant acquittals and funder-specific reporting
Audit preparation — the complete workpaper file, reconciled and referenced
Governance reporting and board packs
DGR and income tax exemption questions
Payroll tax, FBT and GST concessions available to charities

When people come to us

The audit takes longer and costs more each year
Your reporting tier has changed, or you are not certain which tier applies
A funder wants an acquittal in a format you do not currently produce
The board wants reporting that is easier to follow
You are registering with the ACNC, or applying for DGR endorsement
Your union or employer association needs its financial report prepared to the Fair Work Commission's reporting guidelines

A not-for-profit reports to more people than a company does. There is a board that needs to govern from the numbers, an audience of members, funders with acquittal conditions, and the ACNC with its own reporting tiers. Statements that suit one group don’t always suit another.

We prepare the annual financial report at the tier your revenue puts you in, along with the Annual Information Statement, and a reconciled, referenced audit file so your auditor doesn’t have to assemble it. In our experience this usually reduces the audit fee by more than it costs.

The recurring issues tend to be about status rather than numbers. DGR endorsement conditions that are no longer being met. An income tax exemption self-assessed against a governing document that has since been amended. FBT concessions for public benevolent institutions that go unclaimed for years. These are worth reviewing regularly, before a regulator asks.

Registered organisations — unions and employer associations under the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009 — report under their own regime. The general purpose financial report follows the Fair Work Commission's reporting guidelines and sits alongside an operating report and a committee of management statement, is audited by a registered auditor, presented to members and lodged with the Commission. We keep the books, prepare the report and supporting statements, and work with your registered auditor through the audit.

What the fee includes

Bookkeeping and payroll, kept up to date through the year so year end is straightforward
Annual financial report at your ACNC reporting tier, special or general purpose as required
The Annual Information Statement, prepared and lodged
A complete, referenced audit workpaper file and management of auditor queries
Grant acquittal schedules in the funder's own format
Board reporting with commentary
For registered organisations: the general purpose financial report, operating report and committee of management statement, prepared to the Fair Work Commission's reporting guidelines

What it does not include

The independent audit or review itself, which must be performed by another firm
Legal advice on the governing document, which comes from your solicitor
Fundraising authority applications and state-by-state fundraising compliance

We can quote separately for anything excluded. We won’t do or bill work outside the agreed scope without your approval.

What we need from you

Sending these at the start is the best way to get the work done quickly. The checklists set them out in full.

Governing document and any amendments, plus ACNC registration details
Trial balance and access to the accounting file
Grant agreements with their acquittal and reporting conditions
Bank, investment and loan statements for the year
Board minutes for the year and the current list of responsible persons
For registered organisations: the prior year's lodged financial report, branch records and committee of management meeting dates

How it works

01
Establish the obligations
Size, tier, governing rules, funder requirements and your regulator — the ACNC or the Fair Work Commission — and what you need to produce.
02
Prepare properly
Financials and a referenced workpaper file, so the auditor asks fewer questions.
03
Support the audit
We deal with the auditor's queries directly rather than passing them to your staff.
Fees
from $2,000

We quote a fixed fee in writing before work starts. Complex structures, catch-up years and multiple entities cost more, and we’ll tell you before we begin.

Common questions

What does not-for-profit and registered organisation reporting cost?
From $2,000 for the annual financial report of a small charity, association or registered organisation. Entities with more complex reporting start from $3,000, plus the independent audit fee. Bookkeeping and payroll are quoted as a monthly fee.
Do you work with registered organisations under the Fair Work Act?
Yes. For unions and employer associations we keep the books and prepare the general purpose financial report, operating report and committee of management statement to the Fair Work Commission's reporting guidelines. The audit must be done by a registered auditor, and we work with yours through it.
Can you be our auditor?
Not where we prepare the accounts. We prepare the file and work with your appointed auditor, or recommend one if you need to appoint.
Do we need an audit?
It depends on your ACNC size tier and what your governing document and funding agreements require. Small charities often need neither an audit nor a review; we confirm your obligation before you commission one.

About

A Sydney practice since 1974.

Tsia Partners is a Sydney chartered accounting and tax practice working with individuals and businesses across Australia. We handle the annual compliance work and advise on the decisions around it. We have kept the practice small so a principal stays responsible for your work.

Many clients have been with us for decades, through business sales, family changes and the occasional ATO review.

Our history

The practice began in 1974 as L K Tsia Chartered Accountants, founded by Loi Kah Tsia. Tsia Partners was formed in 2019 to continue that work, led by Jia Hao Tsia.

Loi Kah Tsia

Known to clients as Tom
BComm, FCA, FCPA — Tax Agent and Registered Auditor

Tom was born in Sandakan, Sabah, in 1947. He grew up in Malaysia and came to Australia on his own to study. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant he worked in other firms for several years, and in 1974, with the support of his wife, he opened his own practice, L K Tsia Chartered Accountants, in Sydney.

Over more than forty-five years he advised charities, unions and employer associations, manufacturers, family businesses and individuals. Many of those clients are still with the practice today.

He worked to three principles, and Tsia Partners still does:

Client first
Honesty
Responsibility
