Industries

Tax and accounting issues by industry.

The industries we work with regularly, and the issues that tend to come up in each. If yours isn’t listed, get in touch. We likely work with it too.

Automotive
Floor-plan finance, demonstrator vehicles and a stock figure that moves every day. Automotive businesses carry more balance-sheet complexity than their margins suggest.
What we do for automotive →
Childcare & education
Subsidy income, ratio-driven payroll and premises leases that dominate the cost base.
What we do for childcare & education →
Construction & trades
Progress claims, retentions and a workforce that is part employee and part subcontractor. The ATO tends to focus on the areas that are hardest to document.
What we do for construction & trades →
Finance & brokerage
Upfront and trail commission, aggregator statements and a trust account that has its own audit obligation.
What we do for finance & brokerage →
Fitness, beauty & personal services
Memberships billed in advance, chair and room rental arrangements, and staff who are sometimes contractors and sometimes not.
What we do for fitness, beauty & personal services →
Fund managers
Unit trust distributions, attribution reporting and investor statements that have to reconcile to the cent.
What we do for fund managers →
Hospitality
Thin margins, award-based wages and a compliance load that scales with headcount rather than turnover.
What we do for hospitality →
Manufacturing & wholesale
Plant that carries the balance sheet, work in progress that nobody values, and margins that live or die on costing.
What we do for manufacturing & wholesale →
Medical & allied health
Service entities, practitioner agreements and the payroll tax rulings that have unsettled how medical practices are structured across NSW.
What we do for medical & allied health →
Not-for-profits & charities
ACNC reporting, DGR status and a board that needs clear financial statements.
What we do for not-for-profits & charities →
Professional services
Businesses built on people’s time, where income can easily end up taxed at the top rate in one person’s hands.
What we do for professional services →
Property investors & developers
The tax outcome on a property is largely decided before you buy it — by who buys it, how it is financed, and whether you are investing or developing.
What we do for property investors & developers →
Real estate
A trust account with a statutory audit, commission split between agents and agency, and rent roll value that only shows up when you sell.
What we do for real estate →
Retail & e-commerce
Stock that ties up cash, platform fees that erode margin, and GST that changes depending on where the customer is.
What we do for retail & e-commerce →
Technology & startups
R&D claims, option plans and investor reporting — set up before a raise rather than reconstructed during due diligence.
What we do for technology & startups →
Transport & logistics
Owner-drivers, subcontracted fleets and fuel tax credits — an industry where the contractor question and the vehicle question decide the tax result.
What we do for transport & logistics →
Unions & associations
Prescribed financial statements, member funds held on trust, and reporting to a regulator with its own format requirements.
What we do for unions & associations →

About

A Sydney practice since 1974.

Tsia Partners is a Sydney chartered accounting and tax practice working with individuals and businesses across Australia. We handle the annual compliance work and advise on the decisions around it. We have kept the practice small so a principal stays responsible for your work.

Many clients have been with us for decades, through business sales, family changes and the occasional ATO review.

Our history

The practice began in 1974 as L K Tsia Chartered Accountants, founded by Loi Kah Tsia. Tsia Partners was formed in 2019 to continue that work, led by Jia Hao Tsia.

Loi Kah Tsia

Known to clients as Tom
BComm, FCA, FCPA — Tax Agent and Registered Auditor

Tom was born in Sandakan, Sabah, in 1947. He grew up in Malaysia and came to Australia on his own to study. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant he worked in other firms for several years, and in 1974, with the support of his wife, he opened his own practice, L K Tsia Chartered Accountants, in Sydney.

Over more than forty-five years he advised charities, unions and employer associations, manufacturers, family businesses and individuals. Many of those clients are still with the practice today.

He worked to three principles, and Tsia Partners still does:

Client first
Honesty
Responsibility

The firm is now led by Jia Hao Tsia.
