The rules have changed almost every year since 2015. What was true for the asset you bought last year may not be true for this one.
Temporary full expensing ended on 30 June 2023. Since then the instant asset write-off has run at a threshold set year by year — $20,000 per asset for small businesses with turnover under $10 million, applied on a per-asset basis so several purchases can each be written off.
Because the threshold has moved repeatedly, the date the asset was first used or installed ready for use governs which rule applies. An invoice dated in June and a delivery in August fall in different years. Ordering equipment is not installing it.
Assets over the threshold do not lose their deduction; they go into the small business simplified depreciation pool and are deducted at 15% in the first year and 30% thereafter. The write-off brings a deduction forward; it doesn’t increase it. That matters if a purchase is being justified as a tax saving.
Cars are capped by the car limit regardless of purchase price, and the GST credit is capped in the same proportion. A $90,000 vehicle does not generate a $90,000 deduction.
The deduction reduces taxable income; it does not generate cash. In a year with modest profit, a large purchase can create a loss that sits unused while the finance repayments continue. It is worth modelling before 30 June.

Chartered accountants and registered tax agents in Sydney CBD, advising individuals, families and businesses on tax, accounting and structure.
We work directly in your accounting file, in whichever package suits your business.
A sale, a restructure, an ATO letter, or a decision you want checked before you make it. A few lines in your own words is enough.
A little detail helps us quote accurately: the number of entities, any years outstanding, and the state of your records.

We can quote separately for anything excluded. We won’t do or bill work outside the agreed scope without your approval.
Sending these at the start is the best way to get the work done quickly. The checklists set them out in full.
We quote a fixed fee in writing before work starts. Complex structures, catch-up years and multiple entities cost more, and we’ll tell you before we begin.

A Sydney practice since 1974.
Tsia Partners is a Sydney chartered accounting and tax practice working with individuals and businesses across Australia. We handle the annual compliance work and advise on the decisions around it. We have kept the practice small so a principal stays responsible for your work.
Many clients have been with us for decades, through business sales, family changes and the occasional ATO review.
The practice began in 1974 as L K Tsia Chartered Accountants, founded by Loi Kah Tsia. Tsia Partners was formed in 2019 to continue that work, led by Jia Hao Tsia.
Tom was born in Sandakan, Sabah, in 1947. He grew up in Malaysia and came to Australia on his own to study. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant he worked in other firms for several years, and in 1974, with the support of his wife, he opened his own practice, L K Tsia Chartered Accountants, in Sydney.
Over more than forty-five years he advised charities, unions and employer associations, manufacturers, family businesses and individuals. Many of those clients are still with the practice today.
He worked to three principles, and Tsia Partners still does:
